Scratchies Too good For Outmarkers

29/02/1992

In the warmest conditions of the summer cycling season thus far, riders were required to cover 48 kilometres under handicap conditions last Saturday.  Senior members were swelled by the inclusion of six juveniles in the race which saw the “scratchies” prove too good for the out markers over the long course.’

With Darren Spiteri, Brad Lester, Paul Rowse and Colin Aitken riding strongly, the back markers were able to reel in the 16 riders in front of them comfortably.  Spiteri, continuing his consistent form, proved too strong in the finishing sprint for Glen Gibson, off the two minute mark, to take first and fastest.  Lester led in Rowse for third with Tim Eerhard (two minutes) and Aitken close behind.

The combination of the warm conditions and bike troubles saw many of the competitors fail to finish although they all pushed hard whilst still in the field.  It was good to see Mike Goyne back on the bike after a long layoff and Ken Bolch also returned after a brief spell.

Unfortunately, the conditions claimed the juvenile boys as not one of them was able to complete the distance although all appreciated the opportunity of riding with the more experienced members.  Aaron Nobelius was the best performer of this group as he worked hard off the four minute mark until he pulled out after 36 kilometres.

C grade juvenile Ben Cumming in only his second ride on the road, showed his enthusiasm for the sport with a time over the short course which knocked almost a minute off his previous effort. Well done Ben.
