Kane Walker Finishes 3rd in the Victoria Schools Cycling Championships

Kane Walker, a year 12 student at Drouin Secondary College,  put in a sensational performance to finish 3rd in the under 19 section of the 2007 Victorian SCHOOLS cycling championships. Competing against Cyclists from around the state Kane managed to stay with some elite semi professional riders to record a podium finish.

Kane Walker, Cy Monk from Drouin Primary School and Callan Barker representing Marist -Sion College Warragul joined over 330 school students from over 160 schools, to contest the State Final of the Rider Sportswear Victorian Schools Cycling Championships. The event was held right in the heart of the city of Melbourne.  Contested on the same circuit as Stage 6 of the 2007 Jayco Herald Sun Tour, the students rode on the 2.5km course around the Tom’s Block precinct – located on the edge of the Royal Botanical Gardens off St Kilda Rd – just hours before the professionals. The students qualified for the state final through one of 9 zone finals held across the state thorough the months of August and September.

Students were separated into 4 age categories – U13, U15, U17 and U19 Students who finished in the top 3 in their respective event received medals and qualified for the State Final, with the 1st placed students in each zone presented with a winners jersey, donated by Rider Sportswear.

In the under 13 section Cy Monk did well to finish in the first half of the field. Cy, age 10, is still able to compete in this section next year.

In the J15 Race Warragul Cycling member Callan Barker suffered a mechanical problem and was unable to finish the race.

In Kane’s race 27 riders started but the pace was such that the main bunch was whittled down to 10 by the bell lap. Gippsland representatives Nick Aitken and Sam Beveridge were prominent near the front of the bunch but they were no match for Kane in the final sprint.
