Sale Rider Sneaks a Win

01/03/2008

The Handicap on Saturday saw a visiting rider from Sale show the local boys a clean pair of heels. First to leave off 16 minutes were James and Anthony Lalor with Cy Monk to join them after one of their 4 laps. Next to go with 8 minutes start on the scratch bunch were Richard Bridge and Norm Grey from Sale. These two set a solid pace for the first two laps until they caught the outmarkers.

Norm immediately put on the pace and Richard struggled to hold on. With 3 minutes on scratch the B grade bunch of Callan Barker, Ross Henry, Dave Baillie and Darly Anderson looked the ones to beat. They teamed well and took time out off the bunches up the road while holding off the A grade trio of Geoff Thomson, Tim Lee and Paul Yeatman. Yeatman, having his first race in A grade, found the pace a little hard to handle and was the first rider dropped.

Cy Monk managed to jump onto a surging Norm Grey’s wheel at the end of the third lap and these two were a clear 1st and 2nd in the race. Norm managed to hold the advantage for the whole of the final lap to take out the win by 40 seconds. The B graders were next home with Daryl Anderson powering away to take 2nd place. Third was Dave Baillie.

Fastest time of the day was recorded by Geoff Thomson.

Next weeks race is a criterium in Maffra on Saturday afternoon: Maffra Mardi Gras COMBINE C Grade 20mins + 3 laps start 2:50pm, B Grade 40mins + 3 laps start 3:30pm, A Grade 50mins + 3 laps start 4:30pm.
