Cloverlea Handicap taken out by 9 minute bunch

15/11/2008

The last four handicaps contested at Cloverlea by WCC members had been won by the scratch bunch. The fast men just continued to chase down the slower riders despite the time gaps getting bigger each race. Saturday would prove to be the end of the scratch men’s dominance.

First away with 13 minutes start on scratch were Jarrod Jones and James Lalor. These two junior riders would work together well into the strong headwind along Parkers road and attempt to stay away for the 44km race. Next away was the experienced quartet of Dave Bailey, Rob Monk, Neil Walker and Matt Kennely. These four had 9 minutes on scratch and were in the largest bunch of the day. More riders in a bunch make the going a bit easier, especially when working into a head wind. With 5 minutes on scratch Mark Oakley Browne and Callum Barker would be in for a torrid day as chasing them were the scratchies Shane Stiles, James Henry and Geoff Thomson. Also starting off scratch but only completing 3 laps were Cy Monk and Ruben Hudd-Bailey.

After one lap all the bunches were still separated. It was clear the 9 minute group would catch the outmarkers and on lap 3 they gathered both Jarrod and James on Parker’s road. Next Cy and Ruben were caught making a good group of 8 riders working together. Jarrod and James took their turns into the strong headwind and the bunch was making good time. Cy and Ruben determinedly hung onto the bunch. Meanwhile the scratch bunch was flying. Stiles and Henry were on a mission and drove the group at close to 40km/h for the first 3 laps.

Nearing the top turn onto Hazeldene Road on the final lap Rob Monk and Matt Kennely executed the crucial move of the race. The long energy sapping drag up to the top turn had most riders struggling so when Rob attacked near the corner taking Matt with him the bunch splintered. An organised chase could not be formed so Matt and Rob were able to stay clear to the finish. The scratch riders passed all others on Parkers road but could not make up the ground to the two leaders.

In the sprint Matt proved too quick for a tiring Rob and took out a well deserved win. These two finished 51 seconds in front of James Henry who was the first scratch rider home.
