Scratch @ Darnum

20/06/2009

The 8km Darnum circuit was the venue for this week’s Warragul Cycling Club Race.

A grade started with six riders and the pace was hot by lap two. Callan Barker could not keep up. James Henry and Kane Walker made the more senior riders like Shane Stiles, Geoff Thomson and visitor Mark Thomson work hard to stay in touch. The youngsters did not have it all their way though as Mark and Shane launched some attacks of their own. In the end no-one could get away for too long and in the sprint up the sharp hill to the finish Shane Stiles looked to have the jump but Kane Walker had just enough in reserve to get over him on the line. Stiles second and Mark Thomson 3rd. Thommo 4th and James Henry spent a lot of energy on the early attacks and finished 5th.

B and C grade started together and after a quite first lap the pace picked up. D grader Cy Monk managed to stay with the older riders for the first two laps. Steve Muggeridge pushed the pace up the hills and Rob Monk was keen to break up the tempo with some short bursts off the front. Visiting rider Justin Gravett and Jayman Prestidge were too strong in chasing down any breaks to let the field split. James Lalor found the changes in tempo too much and lost contact but Neil Walker and Ross Henry hung on all race suggesting they were not ready for C grade just yet. Big Jayman headed for home turing off Stur’s Road for the finish but Rob was locked onto his wheel the whole way. Jayman ran out of steam 150 meters from the line and Rob took over and held the advantage to the line. Justin fought on strongly for second, Steve third with Ross Henry forth, Jayman fifth.
