Brenton Jones Wins Again

14/11/2009

Report by Rob Monk

Warm and humid conditions again greeted Warragul Cycling Club members for the race on Saturday afternoon. With the return of Kane Walker and James Henry to racing the pace certainly hotted up too.

A grade quickly turned into a race of attrition as the young guns put the pace on. First to go on lap one was Rob Monk who punctured. Next to go after 4 quick laps were Simon Baxter and Tim Lee who found the pace too hot to handle. Rob returned to the race on lap 5 and by this stage Jayman Prestidge, Trev Rollinson Matt Malcarne and Paul Yeatman were struggling to stay in touch up the King St Hill. With 15 minutes to race only Shane Stiles, Geoff Thomson, Brett Rollinson, Kane Walker and Brenton Jones were left in the lead group. Trev and Paul continued to circulate but the rest of the field decided to watch the finish from the shade. As the bunch came into view it was Shane Stiles on the front, flying towards the line with the group strung out behind. Stiles pulled off with 300 meters to the finish, his lead out duties complete. Walker took over and looked like a winner for about 50 meters. Then off his wheel came Brenton Jones and it was all over. Brenton took out a strong win from Kane with the evergreen Thommo getting up for third. Then followed Stiles and Brett Rollinson.

The B graders raced hard but seemed to struggle to shake anyone from the pack. Chris Jones found the pace a bit tough near the end as young guns Jarryd Jones and James Lalor forced the pace up the King Street hill. In the sprint Matt Kennelly who was chasing a hat trick of wins decided to take on the role of leadout man. He was on the front a long way from the finish and was weakening as James Lalor flew past him within sight of the line. Jarryd Jones flashed home to just pip Matt for second place. Neil Walker took fourth and Col Brown took fifth.

In C Grade Ken Whittaker rode almost the entire race on the front. Cy Monk clung to his wheel but was unable to get around Ken the powerhouse. Ken held off Cy in the sprint to take out his second win in a many weeks.

A Grade Report From The Webmaster

Went from the gun and had a two man break of myself and Matt? until Kane reeled us in.  Spent the next few laps recovering until I began to do some turns again.

When Shane accelerated up the hill at the 35min mark, many of us were off the back.  I caught up a lap later only to go bang.  Time trialed the rest of the race.  Nice strong finish at 40kph up the main drag.

Average Speed: 36.7kph. Average HR: 174bpm.  Pain level: high.
