Brenton Jones Blows The Field Away!!

Scratch joins up with the chopping block

When a Ferrari is placed in a field of Holdens it stands out. It also goes a lot faster. The Ferrari in in this week’s Warragul Cycling club race was Brenton Jones and he made the other riders look like out of tune Model T Fords. Riding off scratch he cut through the field like a hot knife through butter. No-one could get on his wheel as he passed group after group in devastating fashion.

The only rider who looked a chance to beat Brenton was outmaker Andrew DaBona. BJ gave Andrew a 30 minute head start over the 32km course. After two of the four laps Andrew still held a 16 minute advantage. A the bell lap he was still 8 minutes in front but BJ just managed to mow him down within sight of the finish line. Andrew took second for the second week in a row.

Taking out third was Jayman Prestidge. Jayman returned to something like his best form after an extended form slump that seems to have lasted over a year. Jayman’s last win was in the handicap series last year. A noted “non winner” Jayman managed to beat most of the field home to take out third place. (harsh, ed.) That elusive win is just around the corner. Just ask him!!

Brenton Jones used his scratch team mates Shane Stiles and Daryl Anderson early in the race. He shelled Daryl near the end of lap one and Stiles hung on until the end of lap 3. From there BJ took off. After catching the chopping block group which consisted of Rob Monk, Simon Baxter, James Lalor, Paul Yeatman, Geoff Thomson and Simon Baxter he decided to go it alone. None of these riders could go with him as he rode across a 50 second gap the 6 minute group had on the chopping block group at the end of lap 3.

The six minute group were being driven hard by the improving Prestidge brothers, Jayman and Jason as well as new racers Peter Whelan and Graeme Parker. Jason Dastey, Col Brown and Steve Muggeridge were also doing plenty of pace making.

This group had already gathered in the 9 minute group that was made up of Dave Baillie, Danny Dilger, Cyrus Monk, Jayden Manintveld, Duncan Hamilton and Rupert Hudd-Bailey. They inturn had caught the 13 minute group of Graeme Patrick, David Hamilton and Seb Fontaine. Renee Patrick had also stayed away from the chasers for 3 and half laps before being swamped by the Brenton Jones led peloton.

Jones left everyone behind on the climb before the final bend. He sprinted to victory passing DaBona in sight of the line. Jayman Prestidge took third from Duncan Hamilton, Jason Dastey, Peter Whelan, Justin Prestidge. Rounding out the top ten were Graeme Parker, Steve Muggeridge and Col Brown.

Racing returns to Darnum next week.

The top ten riders in the series points after 7 of 9 racers are. The final standings will be based on the best 6 of 9 races.
