Morwell to Glenmaggie Handicap

10/10/2010

Warragul Cycling Club members were well represented on Sunday in the Grand Junction Hotel 33rd Morwell to Glenmaggie Handicap. Taking part were 43 riders  made up mainly from Warragul CC, Wellington CC and Latrobe City CC members. The handicap event over 65kms was taken out by LCCC stalwart Alan Beveridge in a sprint finish from Peter Whelan (W’gul CC), Jason Dastey (W’gul CC) 3rd from LCCC was junior Jerome Bechaz 4th. Fastest time 1’47.20 came from the scratch bunch with Darren Spiteri (LCCC) getting the honours. First unplaced junior home was Cyrus Monk (W’gul CC), Cyrus finished 5th overall. The winners time was 1.53.46

The race finish was set up by a withering attack up the rise into Heyfield by Warragul’s Jason Dastey. Cyrus Monk had read the move well and went with Dastey as did LCCC junior rider Jerome Bechaz and the rapidly improving Warragul CC rider Peter Whelan. While Dastey had established the break Whelan made sure it stuck. He put in a Cancellara like turn after the roundabout driving the break all the way into the finishing straight. From the peloton only Alan Beveridge was able to get across the gap and the break of five riders were assured of the top spots in the race. They swapped turns down the finishing straight to ensure they would not be caught.

Dastey mistook where the finish line was and sprinted for victory with 500 meters to go. At 300 to go he was starting to struggle but only Beveridge and Whelan were able to pass him in the run to the finish.
