With the 50th Running of the Gippsland Three Day Tour less than one week away it was time for some Warragul Cycling Clubs members to put the finishing touches on their form. For others it was a reality check. Maybe they should plan something else for their long weekend.
The mini tour consisted of a time trial followed by a road race that included points for King of the Mountain sprints and sprint points each lap at the start finish line.
Stage 1
The A graders knew they were in for a tough day when Cy Monk posted a time of 7:18 seconds for the 5.6 km. He was 31 seconds in front of second placed Jayden Manintveld. Then followed. Matt Parkinson, Graeme Parker and Brett Rollinson.
In B grade Paul Yeatman rode a faster time than all but the top 2 A graders. He did a 7:56. Second was Pete Whelan and third Peter Finlayson.
The C grade winner was Brett Patrick in a time of 8:47. He was just 1 second faster than Dwayne McDonald with Mick Blackwood in third. Col Manintveld punctured.
In the battle of the Bensteds in D Grade Frank was too quick for Pam in a time of 9 minutes.
Stage 2
Stage two consisted of laps of the Shady Creek circuit. In A grade Cy Monk and Jayden Manintveld fought out most of the KOM’s and sprints. Cy won all of them but the bunch stayed together until the final time up the hill. Cy did some power meter testing and set a new fastest time for the Shady Creek Ascent. He dropped the field and time trialled the remaining 15km to victory. Jayden was second with Graeme Parker third and Matt Parkinson fourth. This gave Cy the overall victory with Jayden second and Matt and Graeme tied for third.
In B grade Paul Yeatman and Geoff Thompson were clearly stronger than the rest of the field. Sam Abbott took the second KOM and some sprint points but Yeatman and Thommo fought out most of the rest. Pete Finlayson and Pete Whelan picked up some leftover points.
On the final lap Yeatman and Thommo got away over the climb and swapped turns to the finish. Yeatman took the stage overall victory. Thommo was second overall and Pete Whelan broke away from the disorganised and disinterested chase group to take third.
In C grade promising Junior rider Brett Patrick was too strong for improving senior rider Dwayne McDonald. Frank was too quick on the hill for Pam took out the D grade win.
Next week is the 50th running of the Gippsland 3 Day Tour. Stage 1 is at Heyfield, Stage 2 at Leongatha and Stage 3 at Yinnar.
Cy Monk and Paul Yeatman go in as the A and B grade favourites.
