Race 2 – Warragul City Motors Gippsland Combine

10/03/2018

2018 Warragul City Motors Gippsland Combine Series

Poowong hosted by Leongatha Cycling Club saw 41 riders race over two to fours laps of a 17.5km undulating course ending in a steep one kilometer section. The finish favored those who shun eating and climb like pros.

It was a war of attrition in A grade, with many of the A/B riders dropping off the back of the bunch and calling it quits.  Daniel Furmston won from Sequois Frahn and Paul Collins.

B grade stuck together for the most part.  Mark Mason rode strongly for two laps and Jayman Prestidge for one.  A series of attacks by Paul Yeatman saw him establish a handy lead by the final hill.  Roland Elsdon caught him 100m from the top and was followed by Peter Macdonald who is climbing well.  They finished in that order.

Duncan Hamilton appears to have had an easy win in C grade and stringing out the field by over 10 minutes. Next across the line was local Peter McLean and then Colin Manintveld.

A small D grade field was won by Chris Bagot riding his second race.  Next across the line were Annie Pryjmak and Felicity Waddell.

Well done to all riders and many thanks to the volunteers that helped out – Steve Wilson (Race Director), Lea McLean (Registrations), Jim Geary (Time Keeper) and the corner marshalls, John Beech (from Southern Masters), Jodie and Graeme Jans, Sue Eldston and Mark and Michelle Bensley and not to forget Brad Bouquet on the finishing flag.

Next week riders head to Mansfield for round two of the VRS.  The week after, Latrobe hosts at Hazelwood Pondage.
