A strong Easterly wind greeted the 49 cyclists who turned out for the fourth race of the Voyage Fitness Handicap Series. The limit bunches would again struggle to stay clear of the chasers in the relentless wind. For the second week in a row the scratch bunch managed to catch everyone by half way through the last lap.

The limit bunch doing four laps was Rob Waddell, Sue Elston, Annie Pryjmak and Robyn Barker. They were caught by the bunch of Louise Clark, Michelle Scurr, Pete O’Donnell, Deb Bargwanna, Glen Ogilvy and Wayne Tunks.

Chasing them with  11.5 minutes head start on scratch was John Davine, Mariah Dastey, Mick Blackwood, Terry Kelly, Colin Manintveld, Steve Cahill and Andrew Jackson. This bunch lacked a little cohesion going over the hills but worked well on the flats.

Behind them with 7 minutes on scratch was Neil Edwards, Zvonko Maric, Chester Sanderson, Bruce Staben, Luke Yeatman, Roger Bell, Ray Rhodes and Rod Cheyne.
When this bunch was caught by the group of 10 riders with 3.5 minutes on scratch Sanderson, Cheyne and Staben were able to continue working turns.

The 10 riders in the 3.5 minute group was quickly down to 9 as Thomas Sandner struggled to roll through. Series leader Pete Finlayson and Ross Henry were super strong all race while Roland Elstrom worked hard on the hills to keep the group moving.

The Finlayson group had caught the 3 bunches in front by lap 4 but were about to be caught themselves.

The 10 strong chopping block bunch had some serious horse power. Warragul riders Graeme Parker, Glenn Marriott, Scott Keeble, Jayden Manintveld, Jack Walk and Brett Miller were joined by the strongmen from the Latrobe Valley. Jim Timmer Arrends, Craig Skinner, Col Aitken and Chris Joustra had ridden down from Traralgon to race but still had plenty left in the tank.

What the scratch group lacked in numbers they clearly made up for in quality. National Road Series trio James Henry and Jarryd and Brenton Jones only had to make up a minute on the group in front and they managed that by lap 4.

At the bell the backmarkers were all together and huge group of 30 riders stretched out over 50 meters. James Henry put the pressure on and his father did most of the chasing to close it down. Some questioned after the race whether the Henry boys had visited Alberto’s butcher during the week. Ross was in very good form.

On the rolling hills near the Bonlac factory the inevitable attack from the scratch riders occurred and James Henry, Jayden Manintveld and Graeme Parker cleared out from the rest of the field. In the sprint between them James was too strong for Jayden with Parker an exhausted third. Ten seconds later Glen Marriott was a clear fourth followed by Clem Fries, Pete Whelan, Pete Finlayson and Ross Henry.

Mariah Dastey was the first female over the line.

The final race of the series is on Next Saturday at 9.00 am.

Hard Men Love the Wind

When the North East wind howls the outmarkers express their trepidation and the hard men on scratch grin. The harder it blows, the better their chances of winning becomes. At Darnum on Saturday morning it was blowing a gale. Scratch prevailed while the other bunches writhed in the wind.

First away with 12 minutes on scratch were Deb Bargwanna, Phil Porter, Colin Manintveld and Andrew Jackson. They worked well for most of the race but were caught on lap 4 of 5. Next away with 7.5 minutes on scratch were Graeme Patrick, Neil Edwards, Zvonko Maric, Andrew Gordon, Ray Rhodes and  Bruce Staben. They were also caught on lap 3 by the group chasing them.

With 4.5 minutes on scratch and a win in the previous handicap, the bunch of Rob Monk, Peter Finlayson, Ross Henry, Paul Yeatman, Roland Eldstom, Col Brown and Shane Pettingil had every right to be confident. They struggled to keep it together on lap one, losing Ross Henry early and completed their first lap in 13 minutes 45 seconds, a minute slower than the week before. The wind was taking its toll.

Chasing them with 3.5 minutes on scratch were Darren Cook, Pete Whelan, Matt Parkinson, George Tambassis, Paul Makepeace, Stuart Battley and Kieran Schneider from Horsham. This bunch nearly destroyed each other to catch those in front. They had the combined 4.5 and 7.5 bunches in sight on lap 4 and Makepeace, Schneider and Whelan jumped over the gap leaving the rest of the group behind.

There was also carnage in the 1.5 minute chopping block group. Jayden Manintveld and Graeme Parker chopped up the others leaving Brett Miller, Scott Keeble and Gary Olson to record a DNF.

The scratch bunch of Shane Stiles, Sean Roberts, Nick Youngs and Justin Gravett flew around lap one in 12 minutes 30 seconds. If they could maintain this pace for the next four laps they would win.

Riding four laps and starting 2 minus in front of scratch were Adele Whelan, Annie Pryjmak, Robyn Barker and Kristen Theile. Chasing them and starting with scratch was Sue Elston, Lousie Clarke, Michelle Scurr, Pete O’Donnell and Glen O’Gilvy. These groups came together on Lap 2 but struggled to stay together in the wind.

In the scratch group Gravett weakened and Youngs punctured but Roberts and Stiles were able to maintain the cracking pace and when they picked up Parker and Manintveld from the chopping block group they elevated the pace and at the bell had the combined groups in front in their sights. The strong 4.5 minute bunch had struggled to stay organised on the final lap with riders from the 7.5 minute group hanging on and Paul Makepeace and Kieran Schneider from the 3.5 minute bunch trying to pick up the pace.

Rounding the corner from Sthurs Rd the last time Stiles, Manintveld, Roberts and Parker flew by. Jayden Manintveld attacked up the first of the Darnum Park Rd hills. He spilt the field. Stiles, Manintveld, Parker, Makepeace, Schneider and Pete Finlayson were the only riders able to go with him. The rest of the field were eliminated from contesting the sprint for the win at this point.

Manintveld attacked again out of the final corner but Shane Stiles mowed him down easily. Stiles took out the win and fastest time from Schneider, Makepeace, Roberts, Parker, Finlayson and Manintveld.

Thirty seconds later Paul Yeatman, Rob Monk and Thomas Sandner rounded out the top ten. Michelle Scurr was the first female to finish.

Race four of the Voyage Fitness Handicap Series is on next Saturday Morning at the Darnum Footy groud at 9.00 am.

The Warragul Cycling Club also staged a big night of track racing on Friday night which was sponsored by Drouin Cycles. Over thirty riders competed in various divisions.

A highlight of the night was the performance of Shannon McCurley in the Open Division One. Shannon, who rode for the Irish Women’s Team at the world championships in Melbourne last year, was too quick for the men taking out a number of sprint wins.

Forty five riders contested the second race of the Voyage Fitness Handicap Series. It was a quality field but ultimately the pros could not catch the middle men and the 4.5 minute bunch triumphed.

The limit riders doing 5 laps were Col Manintveld, Kate Prestidge and Mariah Dastey. They were chased by Glen Ogilvy, Ray Rhodes, John Davine, Rod Cheyne and Trev Rollinson. Next away with 7.5 minutes on scratch were Neil Edwards, Graeme Patrick, James Blythe, Kayleen Chaproniere, Chris Jones, Alan McColloch and Bruce Staben. Chris Jones struggled to keep up this this group so dropped back sit on the back of the 4.5 minute bunch for the entire race. This group comprising Rob Monk, Pete Finlayson, Ross Henry, Brett Miller, Roland Elsdon, Col Brown, Chester Sanderson and Jason Dastey flew around lap one in less than 13 minutes taking time out of the chasing 3 minute bunch. After 3 laps the 4.5 minute group had taken time out of the chasing group of Darren Cook, Jayman Prestidge, Paul Yeatman, George Tambassis, Stuart Battley and Clem Fries.

The 1.5 minute trio of Matt Malacarne, Graeme Parker and Jim Timmer Arrends stayed away from Glen Schoer, Shane Stiles and Justin Gravett for 2 laps. Starting one and a half minutes behind scratch were the pro trio of Jarryd and Brenton Jones and Kane Walker. They struggled to catch the groups in front. Adele Whelan, Annie Pryjmak and Kristen Theile started 2 minutes in front of scratch and needed to complete 4 laps. Last week’s winner Deb Bargwanna started after scratch completing 4 laps with first time racer Phil Porter and Louise Clark and Mitch Jones.

After 3 laps it was clear the 4.5 minute bunch had the chasing groups covered. The 7.5 minute bunch had reeled in the groups in front of them. Nearing the end of lap four the 4.5 minute and 7.5 minute groups came together making a bunch of over twenty riders. Only Bargwanna and Porter remained up the road but they were in sight and being reeled in quickly.

The pace saw many go off the back. Graeme Patrick was one of the few riders from the 7.5 minute group who continued to roll through. Brett Miller, Jason Dastey and Pete Finlayson were the strongest in the 4.5 minute group and they kept the speed up. Roland Elston telegraphed an attack on the last hill to string the bunch out. Miller, Dastey Finlayson and Monk were able to go with him. Miller rolled away over the top of the hill and held a 30 meter lead rounding the final bend. He looked back and decided that he had enough left to go for home. Dastey and Finlayson chased briefly but made little ground on Brett. Miller gave it everything and took out a strong win.  Rob Monk started the sprint for second and had to give everything he had to hold off Chris Jones. Jones had sat on for four laps without doing a single turn but managed to find the energy to sprint. Rob Monk hung on for second with Chris Jones in third. Then followed Pete Finlayson, James Blythe and Col Brown. Kayleen Chaproniere was the first female over the line.

Race three is on next Saturday at 9.00am starting at the Darnum Footy Ground.

With so many new racers in the Warragul Cycling Club Handicapper Pete Finlayson’s task in the first race of the Voyage Handicap Series was always going to be problematic. In the end the Limit and out-markers triumphed as they were able to go faster than anyone predicted.

Forty riders contested the race.

First away with 9 minutes on scratch was the group of Zvonko Maric, John Davine, James Blythe, Graeme Patrick, Pete Sorrensen and Rod Cheyne. They were caught after just over two laps by the 7.5 minute group of Col Brown, Thomas Sandner, Shane Pettingill, Neil Edwards, Matt Cox, James Golding and Alan McColloch. Sander, Brown, Pettingill, Sorrensen and Patrick drove the combined group well making sure those bunches behind had no hope of catching them.

The 6 minute bunch of Rob Monk, Pete Finlayson, Jimmy Lalor, Ross Henry and Stuart Battely did a 5 lap team time trial. They caught no one but were not caught by those behind either. Battley was the strongest of the group but all worked well.

On the chopping block, with 2 minutes on scratch were George Tambassis, Glen Marriot, Darren Cook, Matt Parkinson, Paul and Yeatman. They should have had Jayman Prestidge as well but he made the hubbard mistake of missing his start time. He had to join scratch and slowed them down. The chopping block group were caught on lap 3 by the scratch bunch comprising Justin Gravett, Kane Walker, Graeme Parker, Jayden Manintveld, Scott Keeble and Shane Stiles. The combined chopping block and scratch group worked well but could not catch the groups in front.

Starting one minute in front of scratch but only doing 4 laps was Col Manintveld, Kate Prestidge, Michelle Scurr, Matt Williamson, Adele Whelan and Louise Clark. Scratch flew by them once but would have to catch them again before the finish.

Last to begin starting 10 minutes behind scratch but only doing 3 laps was Sue Maddern, Sue Bourke, Donna Gibson and Deb Bargwanna. These ladies didn’t stay together long as Bargwanna decided to jump on the back of the passing chopping block bunch. This proved a winning move as she was able to stay with them down Stur’s Rd. This provided her with the momentum to ride solo to victory in the next two laps.

Deb took out the win in her first race just holding off the chasing limit bunch. Second over the line was Col Manintveld from Kate Prestidge with Louise Clark fourth and Matt Williamson fifth.

In the sprint battle for fastest time there was carnage as some riders went for gaps that were clearly not wide enough for a bike to fit through. Justin Gravett came off worst and hit the deck. Jayden Manintveld was able to avoid the trouble and took out the fasted time.
Race 2 of the Voyage Handicap Series is on next Saturday at Darnum starting at 9.00am.
