Warragul Cyclists contested the final race in Parkinsons Refrigerated Transport Handicap Series on Saturday. Cy Monk had dominated the series and held a commanding points lead going into the final race. Saturday’s race certainly didn’t break the trend.

First away on his own was Duane McDonald with 10 minutes on scratch. He was chased by Sam Abbott, Andrew Jackson, Colin Manintveld, Roger Bell and Shane Wakker. This group combined well for 3 laps until caught by the 5 minute group of Darren Williams, Hayden Johnstone, Roland Elsdon, Greg Spencer and Zvonko Maric.

At almost the same time the 3.5minute group of Rob Monk, Col Brown, Geoff Thomson and Neil Walker caught them as well. They had started with Allen McCulloch and Jayman Prestidge but lost both before the end of the first lap. Captain Surge, Col Brown was at his bunch destroying best.

Handicapper Pete Finlayson felt sorry for the backmarkers and gave chopping block and scratch an extra minute. Jim Timmer-Arends, Pete Finlayson, Craig Skinner and Pete Whelan started 1.5 minutes in front of the scratch group of Leigh Hauxwell, Graeme Parker and Matt Parkinson. Cy Monk started on his own 30s behind scratch.

The race came together completely by the end of lap 4. The Cy Monk led scratch bunch hid on the back until just before the start finish line at the bell. They attacked and only Big Jim was able to go with them. Sam Abbott was the only other rider to genuinely try and bridge but she came up short.

Cy won the sprint easily for first with the consistent Leigh Hauxwell taking second. Then followed Graeme Parker and Jim Timmer Arends. The sprint for 5th occurred 45 seconds later and Craig Skinner prevailed over Geoff Thomson, Rob Monk, Pete Finlayson, Sam Abbott and Zvonko Maric and Pete Whelan tied for 10th.

The series was won easily by Cy Monk with 42 points. Leigh Hauxwell was second with 31 points, Graeme Parker 3rd with 29 points. Geoff Thomson was 4th with 24 points with Rob Monk and Sam Abbott tied for 5th with 20 points each.  Full results for the series can be seen in this spreadsheet.
